What Is a CPET — and Where Does VO₂ Max Fit In?
A Cardiopulmonary Exercise Test (CPET) measures how your heart, lungs, and metabolism function together under physical stress. It is the clinical gold standard in cardiac and pulmonary diagnostics — used in sports medicine, preventive cardiology, and longevity medicine.
VO₂ max — your body’s maximum rate of oxygen uptake — is one of the key values the test produces. Wearable devices and fitness apps estimate this number. A CPET measures it directly, using breath-by-breath gas analysis, giving you a clinically validated result.
Beyond VO₂ max, CPET identifies where your body’s limiting factor actually lies — heart, lungs, or metabolic efficiency. That distinction matters for training, for clinical diagnosis, and for understanding your long-term health.
What Your Report Includes
- Your VO₂ max — measured directly, not estimated
- Ventilatory threshold — the point at which your body shifts from aerobic to anaerobic metabolism
- Personalised heart rate training zones — based on your physiology, not population averages
- Pulmonary efficiency under load — gas exchange and breathing mechanics during exercise
- Cardiovascular response to exercise — including limitations not visible at rest
- Cardiovascular risk assessment — based on real exercise data, not resting values
Who Should Consider This Test
- Endurance athletes and serious recreational athletes. Runners, cyclists, triathletes, CrossFit athletes, swimmers — CPET gives you precisely calibrated training zones, identifies your real aerobic ceiling, and explains why progress may have plateaued.
- Anyone starting exercise or returning after a break. Before putting your heart under load, it helps to know how it’s currently functioning. CPET gives both you and your doctor the data to train safely from day one.
- Those focused on longevity and preventive health. VO₂ max is among the strongest independent predictors of all-cause mortality in cardiovascular research. The test gives you a clinical baseline — and a number worth improving.
- Patients with unexplained symptoms on exertion. Breathlessness, disproportionate fatigue, or declining exercise tolerance — CPET identifies whether the source is cardiac, pulmonary, or something else, and rules out overlap between the two.
- Patients with known or suspected cardiopulmonary conditions. The test is used diagnostically, pre-treatment, and to monitor response to therapy.
How the Test Works
Wear comfortable athletic clothing. The test is performed on a cycle ergometer, with workload increasing gradually under continuous physician supervision. Throughout the session, we monitor ECG, blood pressure, respiratory parameters, and oxygen consumption in real time. The session takes 30–40 minutes. Your report is ready the same day.
Results are interpreted by Dr. Nadezhda Murashova — MD, PhD, Cardiologist, 16 years of clinical practice. If you’d like to discuss the findings with her directly, a consultation is available separately for 590 AED.
How to prepare: Avoid eating 2–3 hours before the test. Skip intense training the day before. If you take regular medications, please mention this when booking. Wear athletic shoes and comfortable sportswear.
